Why You Shouldn't Join the Chamber
The other day I was told, “We’ll join the Chamber if you buy from us.” Ugh!
I’m not sure if the person meant me or the Chamber when they said “you,” but sadly I knew I would not close the sale because at this time neither I nor the Chamber have need for this particular widget. This wasn’t a first-time experience. Sometimes the statement is more along the lines of “We won’t be renewing because we didn’t get business from the Chamber.”
It’s time for a change.
Please don’t ask “What can my business get with its Chamber membership?” but instead “What can my business do with its Chamber membership?”
For many decision makers this will require a paradigm shift. Your company leaders may need to make a fundamental change in their approach or underlying assumptions about Chamber membership.
My colleagues across the country remind me often that Chamber membership isn't another club. It's a stamp of credibility and integrity. It sends a clear signal to customers, competitors and employees that a business is engaged and wants to contribute to its community.
