• We think the "Shop Local" program is a tremendous idea and is another reason we believe in the Chamber. We think the program, or something similar, should be continued after the holidays.

  • The Brown Bag Lunch series not only presents interesting topics in an engaging manner, it also provides a great networking opportunity. I look forward to attending many more in the future because its an effective use of my time and is bringing me tangible benefits in my business.

  • Interstate did a small move for Seth Stark & Associates. One Chamber member helping another. It never would’ve happened if I hadn’t served as Seth’s Ambassador. They were using another vendor for the first part of their move but afterwards told me working with Interstate was the difference between night and day.

2010 Back-to-School Supplies Drive

Between May 20 and August 4 the Chamber's Community Affairs Committee will collect items for a Back-to-School Supplies Drive. Items will be received at Chamber networking events and at the Chamber office. Supplies will be distributed to elementary students in time for the start of the 2010/2011 school year.

Today's students need items such as hand sanitizer, thumb drives and Ziploc bags - most of which today's business leaders would not have imagined when they entered elementary school.

In 2009, donated supplies totaled nearly 500 pounds. "We want to double that number this year," noted Nevin Gibson, co-chair of the Community Affairs Committee.

The Committee would like to extend special thanks to COSTCO for donating 50 backpacks, Greenspring for providing a full supply of ball point pens and #2 pencils, and In-A-Bind for its donation of 150 3-ring binders in 2009. Hilton Springfield was recognized for the largest variety of donated items. Personal Affairs Management and Insurance Solutions were credited for "thinking outside the collection box" with their creative, but very much needed, donations.

The Back-to-School Supplies Drive logo was designed by Jeff Richards. A graduate of the Art Institute of Washington, Jeff is a graphic designer and multi-media specialist at George Mason University.
