Two proposed High Occupancy Toll HOT lanes projects are in the works to add new lanes to I-95/395 and the Capital Beltway, expand the regional HOV network and support public transportation improvements.
HOT lanes will operate alongside the existing lanes and provide travelers a faster trip. Carpools will enjoy a faster trip on HOT lanes for free, while other motorists can pay a toll when they need to be to work or home on time.
Fluctuating tolls based on real-time traffic demand will control the level of traffic in the lanes and ensure they are congestion-free -- even during rush hour.
HOT lanes will create a 70-mile, traffic-free network for carpools, buses and those motorists who choose to pay a toll.
